Trading in Gifts for Year-Round Giving
It was a year ago when Intermediate Special Care Unit (ISCU) staff nurse Andy Martin approached his colleagues to ask if they might consider an alternative to the many holiday gift exchanges at work.
Martin proposed that the ISCU become involved in the Listen Community Dinners. And, the staff, including staff nurses, physicians and patient care technicians, were in full agreement.
Listen offers six Community Dinners five nights a week in four locations at no cost to those who attend. The ISCU staff came together, as one of 40 cook teams, to purchase, prepare and serve a Community Dinner to approximately 65 to 70 diners. The United Methodist Church of Lebanon was host to the ISCU’s dinner, the second Friday of each month.
When asked about his motivation, Martin was clear it would be fun--and indeed it has been! And would support ISCU’s commitment to its own healthy work environment, while giving back to the local community.
What Martin and the ISCU staff have learned through their dinners is the value of connecting with those outside our own social networks, when those who are struggling take full advantage of the Community Dinner Program, it is easier to meet heating, rent or other expenses. and the complex and positive effects on one’s own sense of well being, that stems from the socialization and fellowship in sharing a community dinner.
Martin has served as ISCU’s team coordinator, challenging his team of “Iron Chefs” to dig deep creatively, to incorporate cook outs, holidays venues, use of local fresh products (often from Martin's own prolific garden), etc…. and to create an atmosphere of shared concern, respect, and always a big pot of gentle humor!
If other teams are interested in participating in the Listen Community Dinners, Martin would be delighted to help you get started.
