Encompassing three integrated services for inpatient and outpatient areas, our progressive rehabilitation department cares for more than 12,000 patients annually. A large department with 28 physical therapists, 11 occupational therapists and four speech language pathologists, we are the only level 1 emergency department and trauma center in the region. Ours is a fast-paced, challenging environment.

We treat people with a broad spectrum of illnesses, injuries and complex trauma. The collaborative culture among our departments and local community hospitals enables us to provide outstanding continuity of care. Quality patient care and commitment to continuous improvement remain at the core of our mission.

Unit culture

We have a wonderful mix of new and veteran staff, some with more than 20 years of experience behind them. We actively promote teamwork through a unique balance of interdisciplinary relations and professional autonomy. Our staff works closely with social workers, physicians and nurses, fostering shared learning and best practice outcomes.

Our staff has a strong voice within the department, and the opportunity to make a difference through involvement with unit and hospital-wide committees and councils. The Professional Practice Council, a multidisciplinary group that provides clinical direction to the department, is a good example of one such committee. Therapists work within the community, visiting schools and senior centers, to provide critical services to the broader public.

Our therapists are able to pursue specific personal interests. For example, two of our inpatient therapists are currently working on an outcome study that involves therapy for frail elderly patients.

Rehabilitation Services provides many opportunities for professional development and continued learning through in-house specialty classes, weekend courses, conferences, morning lectures by in-house specialists, and formal education. Management is dedicated to the professional development and training of both staff and students. Experienced therapists mentor new team members and junior staff. We offer established clinical instruction programs for students and have close ties with some of the best New England educational facilities. Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center is a renowned academic institution, so ongoing education is a way of life.
