Name: Terri McGuinness
Residence: Londonderry, New Hampshire
Current Role: Medical Assistant Apprentice, Primary Care, Nashua
After working for 20 years in the restaurant industry Terri was excited about the opportunity to shift her focus from customers to patients, further her education and join a world class organization. Starting as an apprentice helped her feel comfortable with the concept of learning again, both in a classroom setting and on-the-job. Terri completed the pre-apprenticeship education and passed the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant certification prior to starting work in the Lebanon Primary Care clinic. After 10 months of commuting over an hour each way, Terri transferred to the D-H Primary Care clinic in Nashua.
Terri takes great pride in her ability to relate to patients and help them feel cared for, especially when they are unwell or unsure. Working alongside the providers who are committed to her apprenticeship has been an amazing development opportunity. Terri appreciates that they take time to teach and feels this has really helped her build confidence in her skills and contribute to excellent patient care. Another important component of the apprenticeship program is the monthly check-in with her supervisor. Having a mentor at work, someone who is there to provide support and guidance along the way, really makes a difference.
The apprenticeship program provided the technical skills and knowledge Terri needed to successfully transition to a career in healthcare. Over the last year Terri has not only mastered the technical piece, but has flourished in a field where caring for others is central to her job.
