Medical and pre-employment screenings
Occupational Medicine provides specialized care for the following types of screenings:
- Work injury treatment and evaluation: Our team of specialized providers and case managers offer a broad range of health services and screenings to assess and treat employees’ work-related health issues and injuries.
- Fitness for duty evaluations: An evaluation of an employee’s physical, emotional, or mental capacities conducted by occupational medicine. Such evaluation may include but is not limited to a comprehensive physical and/or psychiatric medical examination, drug and/or alcohol testing. - Medical surveillance screenings: Screenings are performed to meet OSHA regulations for respirator clearance, specialized lab testing, and industrial audiogram exams. Screening can also be tailored pending specified requirements.
- Pre-employment screening: This screening provides a baseline measurement of the health and physical ability of a prospective employee. Pre-placement physicals are required to be completed within two weeks of date of acceptance of the job offer and will include any missing immunizations.
Immunization management
All DHMC and Clinics physicians and staff are required to have the following immunizations prior to their General Orientation date (unless granted medical or religious exemption):
- COVID series
- Diptheria
- Hepatitis B (as job duties require)
- Measles
- Mumps
- Pertussis
- Rubella
- Seasonal influenza
- TB testing
- Varicella
Non DHMC and Clinics employees will be advised of their required immunizations by their respective employer.
If you need copies of your employee immunization records, please call Occupational Medicine at 603-653-3849. Please allow up to 72 hours for processing, as a nurse review is done for each request.
Blood-borne or bodily fluid exposure at work
In the course of their job duties, staff may be exposed to blood-borne pathogens. An exposure is generally defined as a percutaneous injury (for example, a needle stick or cut with a sharp object), contact of mucous membrane or non-intact skin with blood, or tissue or body fluids that are contaminated with visible blood.
If you had a needle stick or believe you have been exposed to blood, tissue, or body fluids that are contaminated with visible blood:
- Wash and/or irrigate the exposure site.
- Report the incident to your supervisor.
- Complete an OWL Report as soon as possible.
- For medical treatment and reporting, contact Occupational Medicine.
Call Occupational Medicine at 603-650-3850, 5-3850 to report an exposure.

Sick at work
Included below are instructions if you become sick at work or have questions about Dartmouth Health policies for COVID-19, flu or flu-like symptoms.
COVID-19 policy

Flu or flu-like illness policy
For staff, students, and volunteers who may have flu or flu-like illness, please refer to the intranet page For staff, students, and volunteers: what to do if you develop flu-like symptoms (secure login required).
Other symptoms
You should not be at work if you have any of the following symptoms:
- Cough: You cannot work if you have a cough and fever. If you have a cough and no fever, wear a mask at work until cough has resolved.
- Fever: You cannot work if you have a fever (temperature higher than 100° F or 28° C within the last 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medicines).
- Vomiting and diarrhea: You cannot work if you have new (less than 2 weeks) vomiting or diarrhea. You cannot work until you have no diarrhea for 48 hours, and/or no vomiting for 48 hours.
- Eye conditions: You cannot work with eye drainage until the eye drainage has resolved.
